New Delhi, March 15: According to the India Progress Report 2025-26 released by the NXT Foundation, India has surpassed Japan to become the fourth largest economy in the world, boasting a nominal GDP of $4.8 trillion. With a growth rate of 8.2%, India remains the fastest-growing economy and is on track to become the third largest GDP globally.
The report highlights that India has achieved 101 significant milestones in digital public infrastructure, highways, railways, space, and renewable energy over the past year, propelling the nation closer to its goal of becoming a developed country.
Several high-frequency indicators demonstrate India’s robust economic health. GST collections reached a record ₹2.17 lakh crore in April 2025. Additionally, the assets under management (AUM) in India’s mutual fund industry have surpassed ₹80 lakh crore. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has also crossed the $1.15 trillion mark, reflecting investor confidence.
India’s advancements in digital public infrastructure are being adopted by other nations. Monthly transactions through UPI have exceeded ₹21 lakh crore, and Aadhaar authentication has surpassed one billion, enhancing financial inclusion and ensuring that government services reach the poor transparently and directly into beneficiaries’ accounts.
In infrastructure and connectivity, major achievements include the construction of the world’s highest railway arch bridge, the Chenab Rail Bridge, and the ongoing expansion of the Vande Bharat rail network, which has improved high-speed rail connectivity. The country has also expanded its national highways and logistics network, leading to enhanced supply chains and reduced transportation costs.
In the fight against climate change, India has made significant strides in achieving renewable energy targets. With strong growth in solar, hydroelectric, and wind energy, the share of non-fossil fuel electricity capacity has reached 50%—five years ahead of the 2030 target. These accomplishments indicate that India is becoming a key driver of global development in the new world order.
