New Delhi, March 20: India announced on Thursday that it is assisting neighboring countries like Bangladesh with their energy supply needs while maintaining a balance with its domestic requirements, refining capacity, and diesel availability.
During a weekly media briefing, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reiterated that New Delhi has received energy-related requests from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and other neighboring nations.
He noted that India has been supplying diesel to Bangladesh since 2007 and continues to extend help to other neighboring countries.
Jaiswal stated, “We have received several requests from neighboring countries regarding energy. As I mentioned earlier, we have requests from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and a few others. Since 2007, India has been supplying diesel to Bangladesh through various means, and we are still assisting Bangladesh and other neighboring countries while considering our own needs, refining capacity, and diesel availability.”
He also pointed out that ongoing conflicts in West Asia have affected energy shipping routes, raising concerns about LPG supply.
Jaiswal emphasized, “We are prioritizing domestic consumption and local consumers. Their needs will be addressed first, and then we will determine how to supply LPG to commercial establishments. However, the supply shortage remains a concern.”
Last week, highlighting India’s role as a major exporter of refined petroleum products, the Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that it has received a request from Bangladesh for diesel supply, which is currently under review.
The ministry stated, “India is a key exporter of refined petroleum products to its neighbors. Considering our people-centric approach and development-oriented perspective in our relationship with Bangladesh, we have been supplying diesel from the Numaligarh Refinery through various means since 2007, including waterways, rail, and later through the India-Bangladesh friendship pipeline.”
He further added, “In October 2017, a purchase-sale agreement was signed between Numaligarh Refinery and Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation for the supply of high-speed diesel under mutually agreed terms. It is important to note that while diesel exports to Bangladesh have largely continued since 2017, India’s refining capacity, our own needs, and diesel availability will also be considered when making decisions.”
The government has repeatedly stated that it has received similar requests from several other countries, which are being evaluated in light of India’s domestic energy needs and availability.
