India and Australia Launch Joint Military Exercise Austrahind-2026 in Thiruvananthapuram
India and Australia commence Austrahind-2026 military exercise to enhance joint operational capabilities in coastal and island regions.

Thiruvananthapuram, October 19 (Daily Kiran) : India and Australia have initiated their fifth joint military exercise, ‘Austrahind-2026’, aimed at enhancing peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region. The exercise commenced on October 19 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, and will run until November 1. Approximately 120 soldiers from both the Indian and Australian armies are participating.
The primary objective of this exercise is to improve the capability for conducting joint operations in coastal and island environments. Soldiers from both nations will engage in joint planning, tactical activities, and operational scenarios that resemble combat situations. The training will encompass both aerial and maritime dimensions, ensuring that troops can work effectively in diverse conditions. Indian forces will include personnel from the Garhwal Rifles along with members from other military branches.
From the Australian side, soldiers from the 13th Brigade are taking part. The exercise is being held at a foreign training center in Thiruvananthapuram, focusing on sub-conventional military operations in coastal and island settings. Through this collaboration, both armies will share strategies, techniques, and operational procedures, enhancing their ability to conduct joint missions.
During the exercise, troops will receive training tailored to real-world conditions. This includes coordinated military operations in coastal and island areas, surveillance, reconnaissance, and securing critical installations. Additionally, the training will emphasize effective responses to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief scenarios.
Participants will develop joint tactical plans and strengthen coordination during various operations. Soldiers will also share experiences and best practices, helping them understand the challenges of operating in environments where maritime conditions, geography, and limited communication channels complicate military coordination. A notable aspect of ‘Austrahind-2026’ is the participation of an observer team from New Zealand, adding a new dimension to the exercise.
The previous edition of this joint military exercise took place in Perth, Australia, from October 13 to 26, 2025. This year’s training in India provides an opportunity for both armies to exchange experiences and enhance their readiness for joint operations.
‘Austrahind’ represents a significant initiative to strengthen defense cooperation between India and Australia, fostering mutual trust, operational capability, and synergy between the two nations’ armed forces. Furthermore, it reinforces their shared commitment to maintaining peace, stability, and security in the Indo-Pacific region.
