Mumbai: The Indian film industry has raised concerns over the ban on the blockbuster film ‘Dhurandhar’ in several Gulf countries including the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, and Saudi Arabia. The Indian Motion Picture Producers Association (IMPPA) has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging the removal of this ban.
Filmmaker and President of the Indian Film and TV Directors Association, Ashoke Pandit, shared the letter addressed to PM Modi on Instagram. The letter requests government intervention to lift the unilateral ban imposed by these countries on the film.
The IMPPA letter states that ‘Dhurandhar’ was released after receiving certification from the Central Board of Film Certification and has been a major success at the Indian box office. The imposed ban is viewed as a violation of freedom of expression.
It further notes that these Gulf nations are friendly countries with which India maintains regular trade relations. The letter humbly requests the Indian government to engage with the relevant authorities in these countries to respect freedom of expression and work towards removing the ban. It appeals to PM Modi to support the freedom of Indian cinema.
The letter is signed by IMPPA President Abhay Sinha, who has called this a matter of national importance and expressed hope for prompt action.
‘Dhurandhar’, a spy thriller directed by Aditya Dhar and released on 5 December, stars Ranveer Singh alongside Akshay Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, R. Madhavan, Rakesh Bedi, and Sara Arjun in key roles. The film has achieved tremendous success across India and has been granted tax-free status in Ladakh.
