New Delhi, March 5: Zimbabwe Cricket confirmed on Wednesday that the team will return home after their journey in the T20 World Cup 2026 in India. The original travel plans were disrupted due to ongoing bombings between Iran, Israel, and the U.S. Consequently, the ICC arranged alternative travel arrangements.
Zimbabwe’s tournament run ended on Sunday with a five-wicket loss to South Africa in the Super-8 match at Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. The team was scheduled to depart from New Delhi to Harare via Dubai in three batches starting at 4:30 AM on Monday. They were supposed to take an Emirates flight to Dubai and then a connecting flight to Harare.
Due to escalating tensions in West Asia, airspace closures led to the cancellation of thousands of flights in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, impacting the Zimbabwe team’s return. Following this, the ICC devised an alternative route.
According to Zimbabwe Cricket, “Due to flight availability and the changed route, the team will return to Harare in different batches. The first group has already departed from India on Wednesday, while the final group will leave on Friday afternoon. Further updates will be provided as necessary.”
An ICC official stated that the new transit point for the team is Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. Players and support staff will now travel to Harare via Ethiopian Airlines flights connecting through Addis Ababa.
West Indies also faced similar issues after the Super-8 stage concluded in Kolkata.
According to Cricket West Indies, they are working closely with the ICC and relevant agencies to ensure a safe return.
Despite the challenges posed by international circumstances, the process for the safe return of teams continues with the coordination of the ICC and the respective boards.
