The event, organised by BecomingX, Boliden and ICMM on 23 October 2025, saw Hindustan Zinc as the only official Indian partner. The marathon officially set two Guinness records — the Deepest Marathon (Individual) and the Deepest Underground Marathon Distance Run (Team) — making Arun Misra the first Indian to be named in the Guinness World Records in these categories.

The full marathon required participants to complete 11 laps of a 3.84 km tunnel under extreme conditions, including high humidity and temperatures reaching 30°C, loose gravel, and near-total darkness. A total of 57 runners from 18 countries competed to raise more than USD 1 million for the BecomingX Foundation and the Wild at Heart Foundation.

Speaking about the achievement, CEO Arun Misra said the event demonstrated how far the mining industry has advanced. He added that the record-breaking marathon highlighted the role of safety, technology and collaboration in overcoming challenges even in the toughest underground environments.

Through its ICMM membership, Hindustan Zinc aims to contribute to global conversations on sustainable mining, mineral security and industrial growth. The accomplishment reinforces the company’s position in global leadership for responsible and innovative mining.

BecomingX CEO Paul Gurney and ICMM CEO Rohitesh Dhawan praised the event as a remarkable demonstration of human endurance and the mining sector’s transformation. They highlighted that the Garpenberg mine offers cleaner air quality than many major cities, representing modern and responsible mining standards.

Hindustan Zinc continues to promote fitness, inclusion and community welfare through initiatives such as the Vedanta Zinc City Half Marathon in Udaipur, Zinc Football Academy and the Zinc Blue Cubs League — encouraging local sports ecosystems and talent development.

Participation in the world’s deepest marathon further strengthens Hindustan Zinc’s commitment to safety, innovation and sustainable global partnerships. It stands as a powerful symbol of what human spirit and industrial excellence can achieve together.
