Hindustan Zinc Achieves 3.32 Times Water Positivity, Sets Bold 2030 Sustainability Agenda

Udaipur, June 6, 2025 — Marking World Environment Day with a significant sustainability milestone, Hindustan Zinc Limited, the world’s largest integrated zinc producer, announced that it has become 3.32 times water positive. This development reflects the company’s strengthened commitment to environmental responsibility, particularly in water-scarce regions like Rajasthan, where its major operations are located.

The certification, independently verified by DNV Business Assurance India Pvt. Ltd., is a major leap from its previously certified index of 2.41, showcasing continual progress in water stewardship and sustainable industrial practices.

Driving Water Stewardship in Rajasthan

Hindustan Zinc continues to operate as a Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) company, meaning all process water and effluents are treated, recycled, and reused, with no discharge into the environment. This model not only reduces dependency on freshwater resources but also supports the UN Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation).

Priya Agarwal Hebbar, Chairperson of Hindustan Zinc Limited, remarked, “As the world’s most sustainable metals and mining company, we believe water is not just a utility—it’s a shared legacy. Becoming 3.32 times water positive reflects our commitment to preserving and replenishing this vital resource for future generations. With our 2030 Sustainability Goals, we aim to build long-term resilience while setting industry benchmarks.”

Announcing 2030 Sustainability Goals

On the same day, the company revealed its Sustainability Goals 2030, a holistic roadmap covering:

  • Climate Action

  • Water Stewardship

  • Biodiversity Conservation

  • Workplace Safety & Well-being

  • Responsible Sourcing

  • Circular Economy

  • Workforce Diversity

  • Social Impact Initiatives

One of the cornerstone goals is to reduce freshwater consumption by 50% by 2030, based on a 2020 baseline. The company has also committed to sourcing 100% low-quality water for all smelting operations, ensuring more freshwater remains available to local communities.

Green Innovations and Community Engagement

Earlier in the year, Hindustan Zinc inaugurated a 4,000 KLD ZLD plant at Rampura Agucha, home to the world’s largest underground zinc mine. This infrastructure enhances the company’s water recycling capacity and adds to its sustainable mining operations.

To mark World Environment Day, the company launched a massive plantation drive, pledging to plant over 1.5 lakh saplings across its business locations in 2025. A week-long series of events — including environment quizzes, sapling giveaways, “Waste to Wealth” contests, and eco-friendly cricket tournaments — aimed to raise environmental awareness among employees and community stakeholders.

A Recognized Sustainability Leader

Hindustan Zinc is the first Indian metals & mining company to have validated Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) goals aligned with the global 1.5°C climate goal. Its product portfolio also holds Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) certification, ensuring transparency in lifecycle impacts. The company’s commitment to environmental performance has been further recognized by its A- Leadership Band rating from the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) for water security and climate change in FY23.

With these achievements and pledges, Hindustan Zinc continues to set the pace for environmentally responsible industrial operations in India and globally.
