Jaipur, 15 November (Daily Kiran). A pair of Himalayan black bears has been brought to Nahargarh Biological Park after receiving approval from the Central Zoo Authority. Senior wildlife veterinarian Dr Arvind Mathur and his team brought the bears from Jumbo Zoo, Jammu & Kashmir, to Jaipur. On the first day, the pair was given a full diet including roti, milk, apples and honey.
As per the Central Zoo Authority’s wildlife transportation protocol, a specially designed cage was used to ensure the animals did not experience stress or shock during the journey. Their health, behaviour and food requirements were closely monitored throughout the transportation. After nearly nine years, Nahargarh Biological Park will once again feature Himalayan black bears as a major attraction.
In Rajasthan, Nahargarh Biological Park has successfully bred sloth bears three times in recent years, with five cubs born—marking a first for the state. Officials are hopeful that the arrival of the Himalayan black bears will support successful breeding and conservation efforts, adding a new attraction for visitors.
Under the exchange programme, staff members from Jammu & Kashmir will return with three female jackals, two female gharials and two female crocodiles for Jumbo Zoo.
According to Dr Arvind Mathur, the male Himalayan bear is around two-and-a-half years old, while the female is approximately one-and-three-quarter years old. The animals will be kept under a three-week quarantine period to help them adapt to the new environment.
During this time, they will undergo round-the-clock monitoring, health checks and sample collection. Only after completing the quarantine will visitors be able to see them at Enclosure No. 1 of the park. Caretakers Surendra Singh and Gopal Meena were also part of the team.
