High Stakes in Bhawanipur: Mamata Banerjee Faces Off Against Suvendu Adhikari

Kolkata, March 24: As the West Bengal Assembly elections approach, Bhawanipur has emerged as one of the most closely watched constituencies. Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee is set to face a tough challenge from BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari, turning this race into a battle of prestige largely dependent on public sentiment.

The BJP continues its campaign through the ‘Parivartan Yatra’, while many residents of Bhawanipur appear satisfied with Banerjee’s governance. Numerous locals have expressed their trust in her leadership, with some hesitating to openly discuss their political preferences.

One resident remarked, “Mamata Banerjee has done a lot for Bhawanipur. We want ‘Didi’ to come back to power. She has worked hard for all of us, and we don’t want any change. Everything is fine here.”

Another local echoed similar sentiments, stating, “I am confident that Mamata Banerjee will win here. She is doing great work for everyone, which is why we believe she should remain in power. The BJP is spreading misinformation, but we won’t waste our vote. If Didi is doing well, why do we need a change?”

A third resident bluntly stated, “We don’t want change. Didi will win here.”

While acknowledging the uncertainty in state politics, some residents leaned toward a Banerjee victory. One local said, “It’s hard to predict who will win across West Bengal, but I believe Didi will win again.”

An elderly resident added, “Didi will definitely win. She has accomplished significant work in the state. At 80 years old, I’ve never seen such development before.”

The West Bengal Assembly elections, scheduled for April 23 and 29 in two phases, are shaping up to be a polarized contest between the ruling Trinamool and the BJP, with the Left and Congress playing negligible roles. To counter the anti-incumbency wave, the Trinamool has made significant changes to its candidates, replacing 74 sitting MLAs.

In the 2021 elections, the Trinamool Congress secured 215 seats with a 48.02% vote share, while the BJP won 77 seats with a 38% vote share, marking a significant leap from 2016.
