Kolkata, March 27: Kolendranath Mandi, a member of the Purulia Zilla Parishad from the Trinamool Congress, officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday. The announcement took place at the BJP’s Salt Lake office in Kolkata, in the presence of state party president Samik Bhattacharya and Purulia MP Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato.
A prominent figure in Santali literature, Kolendranath has been engaged in writing poetry, short stories, plays, and essays since 1978. He also conducts research in Santali linguistics. For several years, he has campaigned against social evils such as the practice of witch-hunting.
In the 2023 Panchayat elections, he was elected to the district council from a seat in the Bandwan block of Purulia district on a Trinamool ticket. On Thursday, Kolendranath shared that his literary works are included in the curricula of Sidho-Kanho-Birsa University and Jhargram Sadhu Ramchandra Murmu University. Last February, he was honored with the prestigious Bangabhushan Award by the Mamata Banerjee government.
Following Kolendranath’s decision to join the BJP, MP Jyotirmoy Mahato remarked that he is not only one of the key leaders in the Jangalmahal region but also a powerful voice for tribal language and culture. He further stated that Kolendranath’s move sends a significant message to the tribal communities in Jangalmahal, representing a new hope for the indigenous population.
Mahato accused the Trinamool government of subjecting tribal communities to backwardness and deprivation. He added that the disrespect shown to the country’s first tribal president, Droupadi Murmu, by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s administration has incited public outrage. He claimed that this sentiment will impact the upcoming assembly elections.
