Rio de Janeiro, August 9: A helicopter crash in a remote area of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has resulted in the tragic deaths of at least four individuals.
The incident occurred on Saturday at approximately 11:11 AM local time in the Alto da Boa Vista region, specifically near Vista Chinesa. Local fire departments were dispatched to the scene, where they later discovered the wreckage in a densely forested area.
According to reports from the Xinhua news agency, special teams accessed the crash site via ground routes, while firefighting units were deployed to extinguish the fire that erupted after the helicopter fell.
The victims included a pilot and three Colombian women, who were members of the same family. Authorities have confirmed the four fatalities but have yet to release the identities of the victims.
Rio’s Mayor Eduardo Paes expressed his condolences to the families of the victims on the social media platform X. He stated that he has contacted Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) and requested immediate action to enhance oversight and ensure the safety of the increasing number of helicopter flights operating in the city. He offered the full support of the Rio de Janeiro municipal government to assist ANAC in implementing necessary measures.
This incident follows a previous collision in June, where two helicopters crashed over Rio, resulting in the deaths of six people, including American singer Oliver Tree and Argentine YouTuber Gaspar Prime.
Last year, a small plane crashed and exploded near a beach in Ubatuba, a tourist city in the southeastern state of São Paulo, killing one person and injuring seven others. The deceased pilot had attempted to land at Ubatuba Regional Airport but lost control of the aircraft, breaching the airport’s security fence.
