Mumbai, 18 August (Kiran News): The India Meteorological Department on Monday issued an ‘orange’ alert for Mumbai and its neighbouring districts Thane and Palghar. Continuous heavy rainfall has led to waterlogging on railway tracks and roads across Mumbai and its suburbs, causing disruptions in railway and road transport.

Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani has declared a holiday for the second session in all schools and colleges and has urged citizens to step out only for essential work. Central Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer Swapril Neela has also appealed to the public to go out only when necessary. Similar advisories have been issued by airlines such as IndiGo and Air India.

According to the India Meteorological Department, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected over the next 48 hours in Mumbai and its suburbs, with very heavy rain likely at night accompanied by strong winds. Ongoing downpours since last night have left low-lying areas in Mumbai waterlogged. Due to flooding, both lanes of the Andheri metro are closed for vehicle movement today. Railway tracks at Dadar, Kurla, and nearby stations are submerged, disrupting local train services. Roads have turned into ponds, and Mumbai Traffic Police has diverted traffic via Thackeray and Gokhale bridges.

Airlines departing from Mumbai have advised passengers to arrive early at the airport. IndiGo issued an advisory urging passengers to allow extra time for their journey and to check their flight status before leaving home. The airline posted on its X handle, “Mumbai is still wrapped in a sheet of rain, and water is flowing slower than usual on the roads. Waterlogging has been reported in some parts of the city, especially on key airport routes.” Akasa Air and Air India have issued similar advisories.
