Jaipur, April 4: The Indian Meteorological Department has issued an alert for heavy rain and hailstorms in more than 20 districts of Rajasthan. This weather phenomenon is attributed to an active ‘Western Disturbance’ affecting the entire state.
On Friday, the weather turned severe in over ten districts of Rajasthan, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and hail. Areas such as Bikaner, Sri Ganganagar, and Jaisalmer experienced hail, while other regions reported significant rainfall.
In the capital, Jaipur, a dust storm late Friday evening tragically claimed the life of a motorcyclist. A 50-year-old man named Ramjeelal Mahawar was killed when an electric pole fell on him in the Jawahar Nagar area.
According to Radheshyam Sharma, director of the Jaipur Meteorological Center, strong winds, heavy rain, and localized hail are expected on Saturday in Udaipur, Ajmer, Kota, Jaipur, and Bharatpur divisions, as well as the Shekhawati region. Although the weather may calm down on April 5 and 6, another Western Disturbance is anticipated to activate from April 7, potentially leading to renewed storms and rain.
The storm that began around 5 PM on Friday continued into the night, causing damage across the city and resulting in waterlogging in several areas, creating significant inconvenience for residents.
This sudden change in weather has also impacted temperatures, with some districts recording a drop of nearly 7 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature recorded on Friday was 35.6 degrees Celsius in Chittorgarh and Alwar, while other areas experienced a decline.
Farmers have been hit hardest by this adverse weather. The rain, strong winds, and hail have severely damaged rabi crops such as mustard, wheat, and chickpeas. Crops left exposed in markets have also suffered due to the rain.
Meteorologists note that typically, Western Disturbances weaken after March; however, this year has seen six active systems since March 13, which is unusual and disrupting weather patterns.
In the past 24 hours, rainfall has been recorded in several areas, including Bikaner, Sri Ganganagar, Hanumangarh, Churu, Jaisalmer, Jhunjhunu, Sikar, Nagaur, Barmer, Jodhpur, Jalore, Jaipur, Ajmer, Alwar, and Tonk. Authorities have urged residents and farmers to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
