Gandhinagar, October 2 (Daily Kiran) : Gujarat’s Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel celebrated Gandhi Jayanti by purchasing Khadi textiles from the Khadi Gramodyog Haat in Gandhinagar on October 2. He made the purchases using digital payment methods, responding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to promote Khadi and support the livelihoods of artisans and their families.
After attending an interfaith prayer meeting at the Kirti Mandir in Porbandar, Chief Minister Patel visited the Khadi Gramodyog Haat, where he bought various Khadi products. He linked his purchases to the Prime Minister’s emphasis on both Khadi and digital transactions.
In his Gandhi Jayanti message, Prime Minister Modi urged citizens to buy at least one Khadi product on October 2 and take pride in labeling it ‘Swadeshi.’ He has consistently promoted Khadi through the slogan “Khadi for the nation, Khadi for fashion.” The central government is also highlighting Khadi as part of its broader focus on indigenous production and self-reliance.
Khadi is being continuously promoted as a means to support rural artisans and village industries. In Gujarat, the state government announced a special market discount of 30% on Khadi and polycotton products from October 2 to December 31, aimed at encouraging purchases and supporting recognized Khadi institutions and cooperatives. This discount applies to products sold through participating Khadi outlets in the state.
The Chief Minister’s purchases resonate with Mahatma Gandhi‘s vision of Khadi and self-reliance, which were integral to the freedom movement and linked to rural livelihoods. Energy Minister Rishikesh Patel, MLA Ritaben Patel, and other officials accompanied him during his visit to the Khadi outlet.
Earlier that day, Chief Minister Patel paid floral tributes to Gandhi at the Kirti Mandir and participated in the interfaith prayer meeting held to commemorate the 157th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth.
