New Delhi, October 2 (Daily Kiran) : Central Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced on October 2 that the government is enhancing its support for agriculture and related sectors in collaboration with state governments. This initiative aims to strengthen livelihood opportunities in rural areas and increase farmers’ incomes.
Speaking at an event in Madanapalle, Andhra Pradesh, Sitharaman highlighted several initiatives, including the deployment of mobile veterinary units and veterinarians across various districts. These efforts are bolstering the dairy and fisheries sectors, creating new income sources for farmers and rural families.
She emphasized that the joint efforts of the central and state governments are expanding access to services in the agricultural sector, thereby providing a new impetus to the rural economy. Increased investment in sectors like dairy and fisheries is playing a crucial role in diversifying farmers’ incomes.
Sitharaman reiterated the commitment of both the central and Andhra Pradesh governments to transform Rayalaseema into a prosperous region, referred to as ‘Ratnala Seema’. She noted that the mandate received by the NDA in 2024 has infused new energy into the pursuit of significant developmental goals.
The minister mentioned that Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has envisioned an ambitious project worth ₹1 lakh crore, covering ten districts—including eight in Rayalaseema and two neighboring districts. The goal is to develop the region into a world-class global horticulture hub.
This initiative will receive support from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with assistance from the World Bank, Asian Development Bank (ADB), and other multilateral institutions. The project aims to promote modern technologies, improve water use efficiency, and enhance agricultural productivity.
Sitharaman underscored the importance of water conservation for agricultural development, stating that the government is focused on maximizing water use in areas facing water scarcity. This includes promoting modern agricultural practices and technological interventions.
To address climate change challenges, the government is advocating for the use of scientifically developed new seed varieties that can withstand extreme heat and drought conditions, helping to make agriculture more climate-resilient.
She also highlighted several farmer-centric schemes initiated by the central government. Under the Gobardhan scheme, rural waste is being converted into clean biogas, creating opportunities for both clean energy and additional income.
Additionally, the PM-KUSUM scheme provides farmers with solar-powered pumps for irrigation, ensuring reliable and cost-effective electricity. The Prime Minister’s Crop Insurance Scheme (PMFBY) offers robust insurance protection for farmers, helping to mitigate agricultural risks associated with natural disasters.
Sitharaman concluded by stating that the government’s goal extends beyond merely increasing agricultural production. It aims to enhance farmers’ incomes, create rural employment, conserve water, and prepare the agricultural sector for future challenges. Coordinated development in agriculture, dairy, fisheries, and horticulture will provide long-term strength to the rural economy in India.
