Government Denies Forcing Smartphone Firms to Share Source Code

New Delhi: The Government has dismissed reports by an international news organisation claiming that it plans to compel smartphone manufacturers to share their source code and make extensive software changes. The reports also suggested that major companies like Apple and Samsung were opposing this move.

The Ministry of Information Technology clarified that these reports did not include statements from any smartphone companies or industry bodies representing them. It accused the news agencies of deliberately ignoring industry viewpoints to sensationalise the issue.

Government’s Commitment to Cybersecurity and Privacy

The Ministry affirmed its strong commitment to enhancing cybersecurity and protecting citizens’ personal data. It stated that consultations with all stakeholders are ongoing to formulate robust and appropriate mobile security regulations.

These discussions form part of the Ministry’s continuous engagement with the industry on security standards. The Ministry is actively taking steps to ensure user protection and data privacy in the rapidly evolving digital environment.

Ongoing Industry Consultations and Open Dialogue

The Ministry highlighted that regular discussions cover topics such as security rules, electronic interference, compliance standards, support for Indian languages, interface requirements, and security protocols. These conversations enable detailed exchanges on various security-related aspects with industry partners.

It emphasised collaboration with industry representatives to address their concerns constructively. Through these talks, the Ministry aims to understand technical challenges, regulatory compliance issues, and global best practices.

The Ministry assured that all legitimate and important concerns raised by the industry will be considered openly to safeguard the interests of both the nation and the sector.

Industry’s Response to Source Code Sharing Reports

Earlier, the Indian smartphone manufacturing industry had attempted to allay worries about the source code sharing reports. The industry stated that the matter is part of ongoing long-term discussions and does not represent a new or immediately enforceable policy.

The India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) noted that these talks have been in progress for several years and should not be interpreted as sudden regulatory changes.

In summary, the Government and the smartphone industry continue to engage in transparent and constructive dialogue to strengthen mobile security while addressing technical and regulatory concerns.
