Gaurav Gogoi Urges Assams New Government to Prioritize Public Welfare and Womens Safety

Guwahati, May 12: Gaurav Gogoi, the President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, emphasized on Monday that the newly elected BJP-led government in Assam should prioritize public welfare and address women’s safety issues. His remarks came a day before the swearing-in ceremony of Chief Minister-designate Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, Gogoi stated that the people of Assam have placed their trust in the new government and expect it to fulfill the promises made during the assembly election campaign. He asserted that in a democracy, the interests of the public are paramount. The government must work to meet the expectations and aspirations of the people of Assam.

Gogoi specifically expressed concerns regarding women’s safety, noting that while a significant number of women voters supported the BJP, safety remains a major challenge in the state. He highlighted that although women in Assam voted for the BJP, the issue of their safety continues to be serious.

He urged the Assam Police to focus on maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of citizens, rather than allegedly working with political bias. Gogoi stated, “I hope that the Assam Police will be directed to concentrate on ensuring the safety of women and the general public, rather than acting as agents of the BJP.”

Earlier in the day, Sarma mentioned that the new government’s immediate focus would be on implementing the promises made in the BJP’s election manifesto. He indicated that the first cabinet meeting would take place immediately after the swearing-in ceremony.

Sarma told reporters, “Implementing the commitments in the manifesto will be our primary objective.”
