
Muradabad, 9 December (Daily Kiran) – Police in Muradabad’s Civil Lines area arrested five members of a gang involved in uprooting and stealing an ATM machine following an encounter on Tuesday. Three of the arrested are residents of Muradabad district, one is from Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh, and another from Haryana. During the encounter, two accused were shot in their legs and admitted to the district hospital. Authorities recovered cash worth ₹3 lakh, the vehicle used in the crime, pistols, cartridges, and other materials from the accused. Officials are investigating the gang’s wider network.
Superintendent of Police Nagar Kumar Ranvijay Singh, Civil Lines Circle officer Kuldeep Gupta, and Katghar Circle CO Varun Kumar held a press conference at the Police Lines auditorium. They said the incident occurred on the night of 24-25 November when unknown criminals uprooted and stole an ATM from Punjab National Bank’s ICD branch near Lokeshad Pul in the Civil Lines area. The ATM machine was broken open and ₹6,92,600 cash was stolen. The damaged ATM was later found in the forests of Amroha district. A case was registered under FIR number 900/2025 at Civil Lines police station under section 305(E) BNS.
SP City added that late at night, police received a tip-off from an informer that the accused involved in the ATM theft were roaming in Muradabad’s Kanth Road area in the same Brezza car used in the crime and were planning another major incident. Acting on this information, police set up a checkpoint near the under-construction bridge at Bhatavali on Kanth Road. When the Brezza car passed by, the five accused fired at the police with intent to kill. Police returned fire in self-defence, injuring Abdul Mateen Khan and Tanzim, both residents of Mughalpura police station area, in their legs below the knee. The injured were captured along with three others: Hafizur Rahman alias Hasnain from Nagfani Deharia, Muradabad; Naresh alias Fauji from Vasundhara, Bulandshahr; and Zubair Khan from Palwal, Haryana. The injured were admitted to the district hospital.
Civil Lines CO Kuldeep Gupta stated that the police seized one fake number Brezza car, ₹3,08,300 cash, ATM cutting tools, five mobile phones, three SIM cards, one net device, four ATM cards, four fake Aadhaar cards, five pistols of .315 bore with six empty cartridges and 14 live cartridges of .315 bore, one can of black spray paint, two black burqas, one glove, and one woollen cap from the accused.
During detailed interrogation, the five accused jointly revealed that they were part of an organised gang led by Niyamat alias Ghoda, son of Khan Muhammad from Raipuri village, Ujina, Mewat, Haryana. Besides the five arrested, gang members include Ranveer alias Rana from Dhadhuka Thai, Mewat district, and Taufiq Nepali, whose residence is unknown. Niyamat assigns them different areas and connects them with local youths who provide reconnaissance of ATM locations. The gang then targets isolated ATMs at night using their Brezza car.
The arrest operation was led by Civil Lines police station in-charge Manish Saxena, Senior Sub Inspector Harendra Singh, Sub Inspectors Sanjay Singh, Anuj Kumar, Vipin Pundir, the surveillance team, and constables.
