Frequent Headaches Linked to Poor Digestion: Understanding the Connection

New Delhi, March 28: Frequent headaches are often attributed to overwork or stress. However, recurring headaches or a feeling of heaviness may actually stem from poor digestion.

When we experience headaches, we often resort to painkillers for immediate relief. Yet, this is merely a temporary fix. The underlying cause of these headaches is poor digestion, not issues related to the brain.

In Ayurveda, recurring headaches are considered serious. This ancient practice highlights a deep connection between the head and digestive health. The head is viewed as a vital part of the body, signaling that something is amiss. Therefore, one should never ignore persistent headaches. According to Ayurveda, when digestion is impaired, the balance of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha can be disrupted, affecting the nerves in the brain. This imbalance can lead to gas, causing burning sensations in the stomach and chest, or constipation, resulting in both head and body heaviness. This explains why detoxifying the body can leave both the mind and body feeling rejuvenated.

So, what can be done to prevent these issues? Ayurveda recommends a practice called Nasya. This involves administering a few drops of oil into the nostrils, which can alleviate pressure on the brain and reduce excess Pitta in the body. Another effective remedy is a drink made from coriander and sugar. Soak coriander and sugar together overnight, then consume it in the morning. This drink helps relieve constipation. If the stomach is not functioning properly, this mixture can assist in cleansing it.

A third effective method is applying a paste of ginger (Sonth) to the forehead. If frequent headaches are troubling you and medications have proven ineffective, applying this paste can provide relief. Mix ginger with water and apply it to the forehead.
