Paris, May 7: Following discussions with Iranian President Masoud Pajeshkian, French President Emmanuel Macron has called on all parties to lift the blockade of the Hormuz Strait without delay or conditions.
In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, President Macron expressed his deep concern over the escalating tensions and condemned the unjust attacks on UAE’s civilian infrastructure and several vessels.
He stated, “All parties must remove themselves from the Strait without delay and without any conditions. We need to restore the arrangement that ensured full freedom of navigation before the conflict. The multinational mission created by France and Britain can help rebuild trust between shipowners and insurance companies. This mission will naturally be separate from the warring parties. The deployment of the aircraft carrier ‘Charles de Gaulle’ fits into this context.”
Macron further emphasized, “Recent events clearly demonstrate the utility of such a mission. I have urged the Iranian president to seize this opportunity, and I will also be discussing this matter with President Trump. Restoring peace in the Strait will aid ongoing talks regarding the nuclear program, ballistic issues, and the regional situation. European countries that play a significant role in lifting sanctions will fulfill their responsibilities.”
This conversation between President Macron and the Iranian president comes at a time when Axios reports that the U.S. and Iran are nearing an agreement to end hostilities. According to the report, the potential agreement may see Iran agreeing to halt nuclear enrichment, while the U.S. might agree to lift sanctions. Additionally, both parties would remove restrictions on movement in the Hormuz Strait.
It is noteworthy that a ceasefire was established between Iran, the U.S., and Israel on April 8. Prior to this, a conflict lasted for 40 days following attacks from the U.S. and Israel on February 28. After the ceasefire, Iran and the U.S. held a round of peace talks in Pakistan on April 11 and 12, but no agreement was reached. In recent weeks, both sides have exchanged several proposals to end the conflict, with Iran currently considering a new proposal.
