Gaza City, August 11 (H.S.) – Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency has claimed that four Al Jazeera journalists were killed in an Israeli airstrike on Gaza City. Citing a Qatari television channel, the report named one of the deceased as Anas al-Sharif. Al Jazeera has condemned the killing of its journalists, while the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have asserted that al-Sharif was a Hamas operative.

According to Mehr, the four journalists were inside a media tent outside al-Shifa Hospital when the attack occurred just before midnight local time (GMT+3). The drone strike reportedly killed seven people. The channel said that among the 48 Palestinians killed in recent Israeli strikes on Gaza, its journalists were also included.
The Gaza Health Ministry stated on August 10 that since the escalation of conflict in October 2023, the death toll in Gaza has reached 61,430.
Al Jazeera confirmed that its correspondent Anas al-Sharif, journalist Mohammed Karikeh, photographer Ibrahim al-Thaher Zahir, and journalist Mohammed Noufal were killed in the attack. The network called the incident another premeditated assault on press freedom, adding that al-Sharif and his colleagues were among the last remaining voices reporting from inside Gaza.
In response, the IDF posted on X to clarify its position, stating: “Hamas terrorist Anas al-Sharif was killed in the strike. He presented himself as a journalist for Al Jazeera but was the leader of a Hamas terrorist cell, responsible for rocket attacks on Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers.”
