New Delhi, June 22: Four ships carrying fertilizers have successfully crossed the Hormuz Strait en route to India. The vessels are loaded with urea, diammonium phosphate (DAP), and sulfur, as confirmed by an official statement on Monday.
According to the report, these ships passed through the Hormuz Strait in the Persian Gulf last week and are now heading towards Indian ports.
The statement highlighted that amidst current global trade challenges, these ships are on their way to designated ports including Krishnapatnam, Kakinada, Paradip, and Mundra. Upon arrival, the new imports will be unloaded immediately to enhance the country’s existing fertilizer buffer and meet agricultural needs.
As of June 22, India’s total fertilizer stock stands at 1.96 million tons, showing a significant increase from 1.68 million tons during the same period last year.
The strong stockpile includes 814,400 tons of urea, 209,200 tons of DAP, 559,100 tons of NPK, 126,800 tons of MOP, and 251,300 tons of SSP.
Following the Middle East crisis (from March 1, 2026, to June 21, 2026), agricultural activities have surged, leading to a total fertilizer sale of 1.53 million tons. This marks an increase of 132,000 tons compared to 1.40 million tons sold during the same timeframe last year.
To shield Indian farmers from sudden fluctuations in the global market, the government has maximized domestic fertilizer production capacity while also focusing on imports. Post-crisis, domestic production has risen to 1.33 million tons.
The statement noted that total imports at Indian ports during this period reached 436,900 tons.
India has successfully completed a contract for 1.77 million tons of urea in its recent global tender. With this new procurement, India has secured over 9 million tons of urea and P&K fertilizers from the global market, specifically for the current Kharif season.
This large-scale procurement strategy was made possible through active diplomatic coordination with 28 Indian missions abroad, opening various import routes via multiple international corridors.
Urea has been sourced from Oman, Malaysia, Vietnam, Georgia, Nigeria, Russia, Finland, Egypt, Algeria, Turkey, and the Netherlands.
Furthermore, the supply of DAP and NPK has been secured through the Red Sea route from Russia, Morocco, Egypt, the USA, Jordan, South Korea, Tunisia, and Saudi Arabia.
