
Maihar, 30 December: A tragic road accident on National Highway-30 in Maihar district of Madhya Pradesh resulted in the death of four people and left 12 others seriously injured, officials said on Tuesday.
The accident occurred on Monday evening near Tilaora village in the Nadan police station area when a speeding passenger vehicle carrying members of the Patel family from Padaria village in neighbouring Katni district collided with the rear of a container truck.
The collision was not head-on but from behind, yet it was so powerful that it caused chaos at the site. According to police, the passenger vehicle struck the back of the truck with great force, badly damaging the front part of the passenger vehicle.
Three people died on the spot, while 12 others were injured in the crash. The deceased have been identified as Chhonga Patel (60) from NKJ (New Katni Junction) Padaria, Jitendra Pyasi (24) from Katni, and Santlal Patel. The identity of the fourth victim is yet to be confirmed.
The injured have been named as Jagdish Patel, Ram Sahay Patel, Ram Pratap Patel, Mangi Bai Patel, Shyam Sundar Patel, Om Patel, Krishna Patel, Satyabhan Patel, Sant Lal, Satyam Patel, and Maam Patel.
Officials stated that five of the injured are in critical condition, raising concerns that the death toll may rise. Most of the seriously injured have been referred to Katni for better medical treatment.
One woman succumbed to her injuries en route, and the fourth unidentified victim died in Katni, according to officials.
Following the accident, all the injured were taken by ambulance to Maihar Civil Hospital for initial treatment. Five critically injured patients were later transferred to the district hospital in Satna for advanced care.
The police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicles Act.
An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident, including factors such as speed, poor visibility, or mechanical failure. Early reports suggest that high speed may have been a key factor.
