Vadodara Police have arrested former Indian cricketer Jacob Martin on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol. The incident took place near Akota Dandiya Bazaar bridge, where Martin was reportedly driving an MG Hector car while intoxicated.
According to police reports, Martin lost control of his vehicle due to his inebriated state and collided with two to three other vehicles, causing a commotion at the scene. Responding promptly, the Akota Police arrived and confirmed the presence of alcohol during their investigation. Subsequently, Martin was taken into custody.
Jacob Martin, aged 53, is a well-known figure in Vadodara cricket circles. His arrest on charges of drunk driving has stirred considerable concern in the city.
Martin represented the Indian cricket team between 1999 and 2001, playing 10 One Day Internationals. He scored 158 runs in eight innings, remaining not out once, with a highest score of 39. While his international career did not reach great heights, he was a prominent player in domestic cricket, representing Baroda and Assam.
In his extensive first-class career, Martin played 138 matches, scoring 9,192 runs including 23 centuries and 47 half-centuries, with a top score of 271. In List A cricket, he appeared in 101 matches, accumulating 2,948 runs with three centuries and 20 half-centuries. He retired from all formats of cricket in 2007.
After retirement, Martin transitioned into coaching and has served as the coach for Baroda Cricket Association’s Under-19 team. The current legal proceedings related to the drunk driving charge could potentially impact his coaching career.
