Former CM Farooq Abdullah Speaks Out After Attack: I Hold No Hatred in My Heart

Jammu, March 12: Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and National Conference president, Farooq Abdullah, addressed the media for the first time following an attack on him. He stated, “I have never harbored hatred for anyone, and my doors are always open to all.” Abdullah mentioned that he did not know the young man who attacked him and only saw his photo on a mobile device afterward. He raised concerns about security measures, asserting that if an attacker is determined, they will succeed regardless of the precautions in place.

Abdullah recounted his experience, saying he had attended a wedding in Jammu. After participating in the event, he began to leave with the organizers’ permission. As he exited the venue, he heard a sound resembling fireworks. Initially, he thought someone had set off firecrackers, a common occurrence at weddings. However, he soon felt a sudden heat and was unsure of what had transpired.

He described how security personnel quickly ushered him into a car. One of his guards attempted to restrain the attacker, causing him to lose balance. The assailant’s pistol was aimed upwards, and security swiftly seized his hand. Abdullah reported hearing a gunshot before returning home. He emphasized that he had never met the assailant before.

Uncertain of the attacker’s motives or grievances, Abdullah expressed, “I have never wronged anyone. I have always tried to show love to those who approached me, whether from the opposition or elsewhere, and aimed to resolve their issues. I do not know what his problem was.”

Criticizing the central government, Abdullah urged both the central and Jammu-Kashmir governments to assess whether the situation has genuinely improved. “Our opinions may differ, but we must work together in a democratic system where everyone has the right to express their views. How can a government function without power?” He lamented that the promised restoration of statehood has yet to materialize.

Regarding his security, Abdullah remarked that no matter how much security is enhanced, attackers always find an advantage. He highlighted the troubling reality of living in an era where terrorism is rampant and difficult to control, despite ongoing efforts to manage it.

Questioning the police arrangements, Abdullah noted that at the wedding he attended, many prominent figures were present, yet no police officers were on site. “By the grace of Allah, my security was with me, and I survived,” he stated.

He also mentioned receiving a call from Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who inquired about his well-being and assured him that an investigation would be conducted. Abdullah remarked, “Such incidents occur in an atmosphere of hatred. No religion teaches hatred; it only teaches love.”

He expressed gratitude to the NSG and state police for risking their lives to protect him, stating, “I lack the words to express my appreciation for what they have done.”
