Mirzapur, 23 August (Kiran News). Heavy rainfall in the Jamalpur block at the far end of Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur district has caused floods in the Chandraprabha and Gadai rivers, resulting in devastation across the region. Crops in half a dozen villages, including Sahjani Kala and Khurd, have been submerged, leaving farmers deeply worried.
The outflow of water from the Chandraprabha river, originating in neighbouring Chandauli district, has been blocked due to jammed regulators and silt accumulation in the gates. This has led to such a strong flow on the Pasahi-Chitaudi route that the road has been completely cut off. The situation has become even more serious with the Pasahi-Sahjani regulator also being jammed. Villagers allege that officials from the Bundhi department never visit for inspection, and it is the farmers who suffer the consequences.
As the water level of the Chandraprabha river rose, crops in Pasahi, Davank, Sahjani Kala, Khurd, and Pratappur villages have become submerged. On the other hand, the Gadai river has also swollen, causing four feet of water to flow over the alternative route to Odi, the native village of Water Resources Minister Swatantra Dev Singh, cutting off all access. Panic spread in Hasouli village after a breach in the embankment of the Gadai river. Villagers say that if the regulator gate near Bahuar village had been repaired on time, the embankment would not have broken and the crops would have been saved.
Villagers Vijay Kumar, Rajan Singh, and Deepak Kumar have alleged that irrigation department officials show repairs only on paper and misuse the budget. During the rainy season, when floods come, the regulators become jammed, and the pressure of water breaks the embankments, letting excess water flood the fields and ruining the hard work of the farmers.
