Kullu, 26 August (Kiran News). After heavy rainfall late Monday night, the Beas River in Kullu district turned ferocious, causing widespread destruction. In the Bahang area, around five shops were swallowed by the river, and only the front portion of the famous Sher-e-Punjab restaurant survived, with the rest swept away by the strong current. Additionally, two residential houses were completely destroyed after coming under the river’s flow.

Residents in towns and villages along the riverbanks spent the entire night in fear, unable to sleep as the river’s water level kept rising rapidly due to continuous rainfall over the past two days, worsening the situation.
Flooding has led to the disruption of the Manali-Leh highway. About one kilometre ahead of Manali, near Vashisht Chowk, the Beas River has eroded nearly 200 metres of the road. If the rainfall continues, more stretches of the road may be washed away. The Volvo bus stand at the entrance of Manali has also suffered serious damage.
The Cloth and Aloo Ground areas have seen roads heavily damaged by the floodwaters. Several buildings in Old Manali have also been affected. The Kullu-Manali road has suffered damage at several points, and the Left Bank road at Chhurd has been completely destroyed, putting nearby buildings at risk.
In the Bhuntar area, the Khokhan stream is in spate. In Shuradh, a three-storey women’s building under construction collapsed within moments due to the rain. In the Manikaran valley, continuous falling stones and debris from the hills have further increased the danger in the area.
Lagghati and Balichowki areas have also suffered heavy losses, with several houses collapsing and some on the verge of falling. The rain has not stopped in the valley, and the situation continues to worsen.
The administration has started relief and rescue operations, but bad weather and continuous rain are hampering the efforts. Locals have been urged to remain alert and stay in safe places.
