FIR Filed Against Suvendu Adhikari for Communal Remarks in West Bengal

Kolkata, March 4: An FIR has been filed against Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, at a police station in Kolkata. He is accused of making communal remarks during the Dol Yatra festival.

Adhikari celebrated the festival on Tuesday with local BJP workers, sadhus, and voters from the Bhawanipur constituency, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee currently serves as the MLA.

While addressing the voters of Bhawanipur, Adhikari publicly warned about the dangers of “pseudo-secularism” and “atheism.” He also called for “broad Hindu unity” ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.

Later that day, young CPI-M leader Sainik Sur filed a formal complaint against Adhikari at the Ballygunge police station, alleging that his statements were communally sensitive.

In his complaint, Sur argued that the opposition leader’s comments are not only politically provocative but also capable of inciting communal discrimination and hatred against secular citizens and atheists.

Sur later told reporters that Adhikari’s remarks have already sparked unrest and protests among the public. He emphasized that such statements could disrupt public peace. In a pluralistic society, communal harmony is essential for peaceful coexistence, which is now indirectly at risk.

He also accused media personnel of widely promoting the opposition leader’s communally sensitive comments.
