FIR Filed Against Ranveer Singh Over Alleged Religious Sentiment Hurt at IFFI

Bengaluru police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh, accusing him of hurting religious sentiments during his appearance at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI). The incident has sparked widespread reactions across the country.

The case was filed at the High Grounds police station in Bengaluru following a complaint by lawyer Prashant Methal. He alleged that Ranveer Singh disrespected the Chavundi Daiv and traditional deity worship, which are revered in Karnataka’s coastal regions.

The FIR states that action is being taken under three sections of the Indian Penal Code. These include provisions related to disturbing public peace and harmony, deliberate insult to religion or religious beliefs, and acts intended to outrage religious feelings through words, gestures, or conduct.

The complainant explained that Chavundi Daiv is a protector deity symbolising divine feminine power and holds great significance among local devotees. Ranveer Singh had enacted a scene on stage from the emotional sequence of the film ‘Kantara: Chapter 1’, which is associated with the respect of Chavundi Daiv. Despite requests not to perform this act, the actor went ahead and reportedly referred to the deity as a ‘ghost’.

According to the complainant, Ranveer Singh’s actions were intentional and malicious, aimed at offending millions of Hindu followers. There is concern that such behaviour may incite communal disharmony and religious hatred within society.

The complaint further states that calling Chavundi Daiv a ghost is an objectionable and insulting remark, amounting to a serious affront to Hindu traditions and faith. The complainant also mentioned that Chavundi Daiv is the family deity whom they have worshipped since childhood.

The police have initiated a legal investigation into the matter following the FIR.
