Cape Town, October 15 (Daily Kiran): South Africa has qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2026, marking its return to the global stage after 14 years. The team secured a 3–0 victory over Rwanda on Tuesday, finishing at the top of Group C and sealing its place in the final round of qualifiers.

This will be South Africa’s first World Cup appearance since 2010, when it hosted the tournament. The team’s qualification was also aided by Nigeria, which defeated Benin 4–0, pushing Benin down to third place despite being two points ahead before the final round.

South Africa topped the group with 18 points, while Nigeria and Benin both finished with 17 points, with Nigeria taking the runner-up spot on goal difference.

In the match against Rwanda, Thalente Mbatha opened the scoring in the 5th minute, followed by Oswin Appolis in the 21st minute. The victory was sealed in the 72nd minute when Evidence Makgopa scored with a header, ensuring a comfortable win.

Notably, South Africa had been penalized last month with a three-point deduction for fielding a suspended player in March. However, the team overcame that setback to secure qualification in emphatic fashion.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen produced a stellar performance, scoring a hat-trick with goals in the 3rd, 37th, and 47th minutes, while Frank Onyeka added the fourth goal in the final minutes.

In another qualifier, Algeria also booked its World Cup spot with a 2–1 win over Uganda. Mohamed Amoura scored twice from penalties to lead Algeria to victory, becoming the top scorer in the African qualifiers with 10 goals. Goalkeeper Luca Zidane, son of French legend Zinedine Zidane, made his debut for Algeria, though Uganda’s Steven Mukwala opened the scoring within the first six minutes.

With these results, South Africa, Algeria, and Nigeria (potential playoff) have made strong progress in their campaigns for the FIFA World Cup 2026.
