New Delhi, April 29: FIFA President Gianni Infantino commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s passion for sports on Wednesday. He shared a photo of PM Modi playing football with children in Sikkim.
Infantino, known for his efforts to popularize football in South Asia, posted the image on Instagram with the caption, “It was great to see PM Modi enjoying our beautiful game. Football truly connects the world.”
On Tuesday, PM Modi played football with young athletes in Gangtok, Sikkim, describing it as a lovely morning and an energetic session.
The Prime Minister shared several pictures on X, stating, “There’s nothing like playing football on a lovely morning in Gangtok with my young friends.”
In another post, he remarked, “An energetic football session with the youth.”
Infantino and PM Modi have met multiple times at international forums. Their notable encounters include the G-20 summit in Argentina in December 2018 and a meeting in Kuwait in December 2024.
During the G-20 summit, Infantino gifted PM Modi a football jersey bearing his name. At that time, PM Modi expressed, “It’s impossible to come to Argentina and not think about football. Argentine players are very popular in India. I thank FIFA President Gianni Infantino for this jersey.”
While football may not be as nationally popular in India, it enjoys significant popularity in the northeastern states. In states like Sikkim, Mizoram, Manipur, and Meghalaya, football is more favored than cricket.
