Ethiopia Denies Drone Attack Claims from Sudan Amid Rising Tensions

Addis Ababa, May 6: The Ethiopian government has dismissed Sudan’s allegations of drone attacks as baseless. Sudan has recalled its ambassador from Ethiopia following claims that several drone strikes targeted its international airport on Monday.

Sudan’s Foreign Minister, Mohi Al-Din Salem, stated on Tuesday that the country is prepared for an open confrontation with Ethiopia. According to a report by Xinhua News Agency, the foreign minister asserted that the drones used in the attacks were launched from Bahir Dar Airport in Ethiopia.

He emphasized that Sudan has the legal right to respond to the attacks in its own way, stating, “We do not wish to initiate an attack on any country, but those who attack us will certainly receive a response.”

Sudanese army spokesperson Asim Awad Abdelwahab also indicated that the military would retaliate with increased force, claiming to have solid evidence of Ethiopia’s involvement in the attacks.

In contrast, Ethiopia’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Tuesday categorically rejecting Sudan’s accusations. It accused Sudan of violating Ethiopia’s borders and security.

The ministry noted that Ethiopia had remained silent until now, considering the fraternal relations between the two nations, and refrained from publicly addressing serious violations committed by certain factions involved in Sudan’s civil war.

Ethiopia further accused the Sudanese army of providing weapons and funds to fighters from the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), facilitating their incursions into Ethiopia’s western border.

Since April 2023, a conflict has been ongoing in Sudan between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, resulting in thousands of deaths and millions displaced from their homes.

In its statement, Ethiopia stressed the urgent need for a humanitarian ceasefire in Sudan and called for a transparent, inclusive, and citizen-led dialogue and political process to achieve lasting peace.
