EPFO Rule Update

In a major step toward digitizing services, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has introduced face authentication technology for the seamless creation and activation of the Universal Account Number (UAN). The initiative aims to offer EPFO members a secure, contactless, and fully digital experience, greatly simplifying access to key retirement-related services.

EPFO Rule Update

A Move Toward Secure and Contactless Services

Announcing the launch, Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya highlighted that EPFO members can now generate their UANs using face authentication — eliminating the need for physical presence or traditional biometric verification. This advanced system enhances security while accelerating the overall process, replacing older OTP-based or manual methods with a more precise and sophisticated digital alternative.

UAN Generation via UMANG App

The service is now live through the UMANG mobile application. Employers can use the app to create UANs for new employees by leveraging Aadhaar-based Face Authentication Technology (FAT).

Here’s how it works:

  • Employees simply launch the UMANG app

  • Complete a quick face scan

  • Undergo Aadhaar authentication

  • Receive their UAN via SMS on their Aadhaar-linked mobile number

This streamlined process makes it easy for new employees to gain instant access to their provident fund accounts.

Convenient Access to UAN Card and Services

Once generated, employees can download their UAN Card directly from the UMANG app or the EPFO Member Portal. Even existing users with an unactivated UAN can now activate it simply through the face recognition feature, significantly reducing reliance on employers or EPFO offices for basic services.

Greater Security with Face Authentication

This new face authentication system offers enhanced user security and convenience. It enables members to manage their PF accounts independently, ensuring that verification remains accurate and tamper-proof. Minister Mandaviya underscored that 100% Aadhaar validation combined with face recognition helps maintain data integrity for millions of EPFO users nationwide.

Doorstep Pension Services Coming Soon

Looking ahead, EPFO plans to further extend face verification to enable doorstep services for pensioners. In collaboration with MY Bharat volunteers, the organization will soon facilitate the submission of Digital Life Certificates via facial recognition — a move designed to help retirees who face challenges visiting EPFO offices for verification.

Conclusion: A Game-Changing Digital Initiative

With this innovative digital step, EPFO is taking a bold leap toward modernizing its services. From UAN generation to pension validation, face authentication is poised to significantly enhance convenience and security for crores of EPFO beneficiaries — setting a new standard for digital governance in India’s social security space.
