Jerusalem, February 25: Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a warm welcome from Israeli lawmakers during his visit. As soon as PM Modi entered the Knesset, members stood to greet him, filling the chamber with chants of “Modi, Modi.”
Speaker Amir Ohana praised PM Modi as a representative of the world’s largest democracy and hailed him as a great leader, saying, “Welcome to the Knesset.”
A light-hearted moment occurred when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu joked with PM Modi about Israel’s challenging political landscape. He compared India’s “1.5 billion people with 30 parties” to Israel’s “10 million with 13 parties,” asking, “Do you see our problem? You are in a better situation.” PM Modi was seen laughing in response.
Following this, the Indian Premier paused to sign the official guestbook in the Chagall Hall. There, he and Netanyahu greeted a group of enthusiastic children waving Israeli and Indian flags. The two leaders then proceeded to the office of Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana.
Later, they returned to the Knesset, where PM Modi was once again referred to as a great leader.
It is noteworthy that PM Modi is on a two-day visit to Israel at the invitation of Netanyahu. A brief meeting between the two leaders took place as per the schedule.
On Thursday morning, both leaders will visit the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial Center, a common stop for visiting heads of state. According to the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office, they will hold a significant meeting at the King David Hotel at 11 AM, followed by the exchange of pre-prepared agreements and a joint statement to the media.
This marks PM Modi’s second visit to Israel in the past nine years, with his first visit occurring in July 2017.
