Kolkata, May 11: In light of the recent murder of his personal assistant, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari will continue to receive enhanced security from both state and central forces. This decision comes as the administration seeks to mitigate any potential risks, as confirmed by officials from the state secretariat, Nabanna.
Currently, both state police and central security personnel are deployed to ensure the Chief Minister’s safety. Suvendu Adhikari began receiving central security after leaving the Trinamool Congress to join the BJP in December 2020. His security detail remained intact after he became the Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly in 2021.
Although the state government initially proposed to assign state police for his protection, reports indicate that Adhikari declined that offer at the time. Following the tragic murder of his assistant, Chandranath Rath, on May 6, the Chief Minister’s security measures are set to be further intensified.
It is noteworthy that during his tenure as the Leader of the Opposition, the Ministry of Home Affairs provided him with Z-category security. Central forces managed his protection until he took the oath as Chief Minister on Saturday, after which the state police formally assumed responsibility.
Despite the Z-category security, the Chief Minister prefers not to have excessive security around him. Officials have stated that arrangements are being made to ensure that his official engagements and public movements are not hindered.
A senior official from Nabanna assured that the Chief Minister will be provided with necessary security, while also ensuring that the security arrangements do not cause unnecessary inconvenience.
