Bengaluru, March 24: The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 is set to kick off on March 28. The opening match will feature the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) facing off against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. In preparation for this event, authorities have implemented robust security and traffic management measures.
Following the inaugural match on March 28, RCB will compete against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on April 5, and then face the Rajasthan Royals (RR) on April 10. On April 12, RCB will take on the Mumbai Indians (MI).
Bengaluru’s Police Commissioner, S. Kumar Singh, addressed a press conference on Tuesday, outlining that these arrangements are in accordance with committee recommendations to ensure safety and a seamless match experience.
Commissioner Singh urged the public to cooperate, stating that only spectators with valid digital tickets will be allowed entry to the stadium. Those without tickets will not be permitted to gather inside or around the venue.
Parking facilities have been arranged, including paid parking options. Additionally, the public is encouraged to utilize metro services, with integrated ticketing options available.
Fans can access the stadium via the MG Road and Cubbon Park metro stations, both of which are conveniently located nearby. Authorities have also recommended using BMTC buses to alleviate traffic congestion.
As part of the preparations, mock drills and evacuation exercises have been conducted. Ambulances and medical teams will be stationed around the stadium for emergencies.
It is important to note that on June 4, 2025, a tragic stampede occurred outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium during RCB’s victory celebrations, resulting in the loss of 11 fans’ lives and injuries to over 50 others due to the overwhelming crowd of approximately 300,000.
In remembrance of the victims, RCB management official Rajesh Menon announced that 11 seats will be reserved in honor of those who lost their lives. Players will wear black armbands as a mark of respect. Menon stated that the management has already taken steps to support the families of the deceased and will discuss further assistance in the future. As a tribute, players will wear jersey number 11 during every practice session in memory of the 11 victims.
