Atlanta, July 2: England has successfully reached the Round of 16 in the FIFA World Cup 2026. The team secured a 2-1 victory against DR Congo, thanks to two late goals from captain Harry Kane in the final 15 minutes of the match. England will now face Mexico in the next round.
This win marks the first time in England’s history that they have triumphed in a World Cup match after trailing at halftime. Previously, they had drawn twice and lost seven times in nine instances when behind at the break.
Following the match, winger Anthony Gordon shared insights on Kane’s leadership. He noted that Kane communicated effectively with his teammates on the pitch and later celebrated with fans, emphasizing the importance of enjoying the moment despite the challenges of securing the win.
According to Gordon, Kane stated, “This victory does not define us. It doesn’t mean we win the tournament, but we should enjoy it like any other country. Sometimes, larger nations forget to celebrate properly because they want to progress, and their expectations are high. But that shouldn’t be the case. This is a win against a strong team in the World Cup, and now we are in the Round of 16.”
Gordon played a crucial role in England’s comeback, assisting both of Kane’s goals after being substituted in during the 61st minute. However, rather than focusing on himself, the 25-year-old highlighted Kane’s impact on his decision-making during the game. He explained how Kane’s goal-scoring ability influenced his choices, stating, “It’s all about Kane. Without him, I might not have made those decisions. For the cross, I would have probably taken a normal shot, but as soon as I touched it, I felt he was in there, so I thought to put the ball in the area, and he took care of the rest for both goals.”
