Encounter Begins in Ganderbal, Jammu and Kashmir; Two Militants Believed Trapped

Srinagar, March 31: An encounter has commenced in Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir as security forces engaged with militants hiding in a village. This operation was initiated on Tuesday evening based on specific intelligence reports, according to officials.

Government sources revealed that following credible intelligence about the presence of militants, a joint force comprising the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and CRPF surrounded the village of Arhama in Ganderbal.

As security personnel closed in on the hiding militants, gunfire erupted, marking the start of the ongoing encounter. Sources indicate that all escape routes for the militants have been sealed off. It is believed that two militants are currently trapped in the village, with continuous exchanges of fire reported.

Ganderbal district in northern Kashmir has previously been considered free of militant presence, making this encounter a significant concern for security forces.

In a related incident, on October 20, 2024, militants attacked a labor camp near the Z-Morh tunnel construction site in Gagangeer, Ganderbal, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals, including six non-local workers and a local doctor. Several others were injured in this attack, which targeted workers involved in the crucial Z-Morh tunnel project.

Similarly, on April 22, 2025, militants killed 25 civilians, including 24 tourists and a local pony owner, in the meadows of Baisaran in Pahalgam. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) and police later released images of suspects based on CCTV footage.

The three militants involved in the October 2024 Gagangeer attack and the April 2025 Pahalgam massacre were neutralized by security forces during an operation on July 28, 2025, known as Operation Mahadev.

Security forces confirmed that the three militants linked to the attacks in Pahalgam and the Z-Morh tunnel were eliminated in the foothills of Mahadev Mountain in Srinagar during Operation Mahadev.
