Cairo, June 1: Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has engaged in discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron regarding regional conditions. He stated that Egypt is actively assisting in mediating a peace agreement between the United States and Iran.
According to a report by the Xinhua News Agency, during a phone conversation, Sisi emphasized that Egypt is in continuous and in-depth contact with all relevant parties to facilitate a comprehensive agreement between the U.S. and Iran.
He noted that Egypt’s approach is grounded in the principles of international law, respecting the sovereignty of nations and their resources.
Meanwhile, Macron highlighted France’s efforts to establish lasting peace in the region and prevent chaos in the Middle East. He stressed the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open for shipping traffic without any restrictions.
Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump mentioned that the U.S. and Iran are close to reaching a nuclear agreement. However, he warned that military action remains an option if negotiations fail.
In an interview with Fox News at the White House, Trump stated that ensuring Iran never acquires nuclear weapons is his administration’s top priority.
“We are very close to a great deal. If this agreement goes through, that’s fantastic; if not, we may have to consider military options,” he said.
Trump claimed that Iran has agreed to terms under which it will neither develop nor acquire nuclear weapons.
“My main guarantee is that there will be no nuclear weapons. They have agreed to this,” he added.
He explained that when he expressed concerns about Iran potentially purchasing nuclear weapons from elsewhere, the terms of the negotiations were broadened.
“Initially, they said they wouldn’t develop nuclear weapons. I asked what would happen if they bought them from someone else. Now it includes that they will neither develop nor acquire nuclear weapons in any way,” Trump stated.
The President described the negotiations as challenging but noted that progress is being made gradually.
He remarked that they are negotiating firmly, which takes time, but they feel they are moving toward their goal.
Trump expressed a preference for resolving the issue through negotiation but reiterated that he would not hesitate to take action if U.S. conditions are not met.
