Kolkata, April 19: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has launched a raid at the residence of Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner Shantanu Sinha Biswas in the Ballygunge area, as well as at the home of Joy Kamdar, Managing Director of ‘Sun Enterprises’ in Behala.
So far, three locations have been raided, two linked to Biswas and one to Kamdar. This operation is part of an investigation under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA), related to the ‘Sona Pappu and Joy Kamdar’ case. Currently, no details have emerged regarding the items seized during the raids at both residences.
Officials have stated that this search operation is connected to the ‘Sona Pappu Syndicate’ case in South Kolkata. Biswas was previously the officer-in-charge at the Kalighat police station, which falls under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Bhawanipur constituency. Earlier, the ED had summoned Gaurav Lal, the Joint Commissioner of Howrah, and Joy Kamdar for questioning in connection with the Sona Pappu case.
Recently, the ED conducted raids at eight locations in Kolkata, seizing approximately ₹1.47 crore in cash, around ₹67.64 lakh worth of gold jewelry and silver, as well as several incriminating documents and digital devices. A Fortuner vehicle, reportedly used by Sona Pappu, was also confiscated during the operation.
Additionally, a revolver marked ‘Made in USA’ was recovered from the residence of Vishwajit Poddar, also known as Sona Pappu, located on Fern Road in South Kolkata.
Poddar and other accused individuals face charges of rioting, attempted murder, criminal conspiracy, and violations of the Arms Act. The ED initiated its investigation based on a complaint filed by the Kolkata Police.
Vishwajit Poddar, alias Sona Pappu, and his associates are involved in organized criminal activities in West Bengal, illicitly amassing significant wealth through syndicate operations. Poddar is also wanted in connection with a violent incident near Golpark in Kolkata and is currently at large. Despite being spotted multiple times in public and appearing ‘live’ on social media, his arrest has yet to occur.
