East Bengal Triumphs Over Mohun Bagan with Historic 7-0 Victory in Kolkata Derby

Kolkata, March 23: East Bengal FC delivered a historic performance in the Kolkata Derby, defeating Mohun Bagan Sporting Club 7-0 at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2025-26. Anwar Ali and Yusuf Aijazri each scored two goals, leading the charge for East Bengal.

This remarkable victory marks the largest margin of victory in the history of encounters between the two teams. It also ties with the biggest margin in ISL history, matching FC Goa’s 7-0 win over Mumbai City FC in 2015.

Following this result, the ‘Red and Gold Brigade’ climbed to fourth place in the standings with 11 points from six matches, while Mohun Bagan remains at the bottom without a point after five matches. Anwar Ali was named ‘Player of the Match.’

East Bengal started strong, establishing dominance early in the match. Their pressure paid off in the sixth minute when center-back Anwar Ali unleashed a long-range shot from the left flank. Mohun Bagan’s goalkeeper, Padam Chhetri, failed to hold onto the ball, which found the bottom right corner of the net, giving the home team a 1-0 lead.

The advantage doubled in the 14th minute when left-back Sajjad Hussain fouled Miguel Figuera inside the box, leading to a penalty. Yusuf Aijazri stepped up and calmly converted the penalty, extending the score to 2-0.

East Bengal continued to apply pressure, with Edmund Lalrindika testing Padam midway through the first half. Mohun Bagan had a rare opportunity in the 29th minute, but striker Mo. Fardeen’s attempt was easily saved by Prabhsukhan Gill.

The match tilted further in East Bengal’s favor when Mohun Bagan’s right-back Joseph Lalmuana received a second yellow card for a foul, resulting in his dismissal. Captain Sol Crespo converted the ensuing penalty in the 38th minute, pushing the lead to 3-0. Just before halftime, East Bengal nearly scored again when left-back PV Vishnu hit the crossbar, ending the half with a commanding 3-0 advantage.

The second half mirrored the first, with East Bengal maintaining control. In the 54th minute, Aijazri converted his second penalty of the match, marking the first instance of a team scoring three penalties in a single ISL match. This penalty was awarded after Padam fouled Miguel Figuera inside the box.

Despite being reduced to ten players, Mohun Bagan attempted a comeback, but Jewel Majumdar missed a close-range opportunity in the 68th minute. Meanwhile, East Bengal continued to create chances, with midfielder Lalhalansanga heading Anwar Ali’s cross just wide of the goal.

PV Vishnu scored the fifth goal in the 75th minute. Just four minutes later, East Bengal netted their sixth goal, with Anwar Ali finishing brilliantly inside the box from Mahesh Naorem’s pass, marking his second goal of the night.

The home team capped off their stunning performance in stoppage time. In the sixth minute of added time, substitute Nanda Kumar scored with a superb finish, sealing the score at 7-0. With this victory, East Bengal secured all three points in the Kolkata Derby.
