Eagles Face Crucial Week to Change Season’s Narrative

Nick Sirianni appeared exhausted as he addressed the media following the Philadelphia Eagles’ loss to the Washington Commanders. The defeat cost the Eagles the No. 2 seed in the playoffs, largely due to Sirianni’s choice to rest key starters ahead of the postseason.

The Eagles secured a playoff spot weeks ago and remain the defending Super Bowl champions. These facts should inspire optimism among players and fans for the upcoming weeks. However, a sense of disappointment has lingered throughout the season, and Sunday’s loss capped off a lackluster regular season.

Despite finishing 11-6, winning their division, and earning the third seed in the playoffs, questions remain about whether the Eagles’ success was genuine or a result of the weaker performance across the NFC East. The team now has the opportunity to prove themselves in the playoffs, though the path is more challenging after the Week 18 outcome.

By resting starters against the Commanders, Sirianni accepted potential playoff repercussions. With a win, Philadelphia could have secured the No. 2 seed and faced the struggling Green Bay Packers in the first round, along with the advantage of a second home game if they advanced. Instead, they will confront the 12-5 San Francisco 49ers and, if seeding holds, travel to Chicago for the divisional round.

On the decision, Sirianni said, “That’s your job as a head coach, you have to make tough decisions. Half the people will agree, half won’t, and that’s okay. You have to do what you think is best for the football team.”

Fans have expressed frustration over the Eagles’ offensive struggles this season. Philadelphia ranks below the league average in multiple offensive categories, including total yards, passing yards, first downs, and third- and fourth-down conversions.

Quarterback Jalen Hurts ranked 16th in passing yards and 12th in passer rating. Wide receiver AJ Brown’s statistics declined from his All-Pro 2024 season, and running back Saquon Barkley’s output dropped significantly compared to 2024. Many attribute the offensive issues to the departure of former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, with successor Kevin Patullo unable to replicate the same success.

The Eagles also lost to all three of their division rivals during the season despite securing the playoff spot comfortably over them. Yet, the postseason offers a chance to erase these disappointments. If the team can use the extra rest effectively and rejuvenate their offense, previous criticisms may be forgotten.

Philadelphia faces the 49ers on Sunday at 4:30 PM, entering as a 3.5-point favorite despite San Francisco’s strong 12-win season in a tougher division. When these teams last met in December 2023, the 49ers defeated the Eagles decisively, and Philadelphia struggled to recover.

Injuries have impacted the 49ers this year, with key defensive players sidelined and quarterback Brock Purdy showing vulnerability after late-game hits. This creates an opening for the Eagles to redeem their season and move forward in the playoffs.

The Eagles now have the opportunity to overcome their regular-season challenges and prove their championship mettle. As the playoffs begin, they must find their rhythm and remember how to soar.
