New Delhi, May 6: The Royal Netherlands Navy warship HNLMS De Ruyter (F804) has arrived in India. This advanced frigate, part of the De Zeven Provincien class, docked at the coastal city of Kochi. Accompanying the ship is Major General (Royal Marines) Rob de Witte, the Deputy Commander of the Royal Netherlands Navy, who is also visiting Kochi.
A high-level delegation from the Netherlands, led by Ambassador Marisa Gerards, is touring the Southern Naval Command in Kochi. Upon arrival at the Kochi port, the Dutch warship was escorted by the Indian Navy’s fast interceptor craft. The occasion was marked by a formal welcome featuring the Indian Navy band and officials from the Netherlands.
Notably, this warship is currently on a five-month deployment in the Indo-Pacific region. During its stay, it will participate in several maritime exercises with partner nations. The visit of the Royal Netherlands Navy and the presence of the delegation are considered significant for strengthening maritime relations between India and the Netherlands.
Previously, Deputy Commander Rob de Witte visited India in February 2026 for Milan-26, where he attended the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium chiefs’ conference. According to the Navy, the Dutch delegation met with Rear Admiral Prakash Gopalan, Chief of Staff of the Southern Naval Command. Discussions focused on enhancing cooperation in the maritime domain, expanding training opportunities, and addressing various issues of mutual interest.
On National Remembrance Day (May 4), Major General Rob de Witte and Ambassador Marisa Gerards paid tribute at the Southern Naval Command’s war memorial, honoring the fallen soldiers. This moment was both poignant and respectful. The delegation’s agenda includes several bilateral activities aimed at strengthening training cooperation and exchanging best practices.
The delegation will also visit various training institutions of the Southern Naval Command, where members will observe modern simulators and state-of-the-art training facilities. Additionally, they will tour Cochin Shipyard Limited to understand India’s shipbuilding capabilities and explore new opportunities for industrial collaboration.
Numerous professional and social events will be organized between personnel from both navies. After departing Kochi, the warship HNLMS De Ruyter will participate in a passage exercise with an Indian Navy vessel. The Navy believes this naval exercise will further enhance strategic coordination and operational capabilities between the two countries.
