Announcing the decision on his social media platform, Truth Social, President Trump stated that Lisa Cook has been removed from the Federal Reserve Board of Governors with immediate effect.

What Is the Matter?

Lisa Cook faced allegations of mortgage fraud. These allegations were made by Bill Pulte, Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA). Bill Pulte is known as a supporter of Trump and a critic of Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell. Pulte claimed that in June 2021, Lisa Cook purchased a property in Michigan and declared it as her primary residence on a 15-year mortgage agreement.

He further claimed that just a month later, in July 2021, Cook bought another property in Atlanta, Georgia, and again declared it as her primary residence on a 30-year agreement. Pulte raised the question: if a person can lie to save on interest rates, how can they be trusted with the responsibility of controlling interest rates?

Trump Demanded Resignation on 22 August

After this, Pulte filed a complaint with the Department of Justice (DOJ) on 20 August regarding the matter. Following the complaint, DOJ lawyer Ed Martin wrote a letter to Fed Chair Jerome Powell demanding Lisa Cook’s immediate removal.

After the issue came to light, Trump also escalated the matter and asked Cook to resign. On 22 August, Trump announced that if Cook did not resign, he would remove her from her position. Four days after the announcement, Trump dismissed Cook.
