New Delhi, March 16: India is home to numerous religious and cultural sites, with many temples showcasing significant spiritual importance. Among them, some temples are believed to change one’s fortune simply through a visit. One such temple is located in Odisha, recognized as one of the 51 Shakti Peeths. It is said that after visiting this temple, even dormant fortunes awaken. We are referring to the Tara-Tarini Temple, where a grand procession takes place during the Chaitra month, attracting millions of devotees who come with their children.
Situated about 30 kilometers from Berhampur, on Kumari Hill by the banks of the Rushikulya River, the temple is dedicated to the twin goddesses Tara and Tarini. According to mythology, it is believed that the breasts of Goddess Sati fell here, leading to the establishment of Tara and Tarini. This temple is counted among the four major Adi Shakti Peeths and Tantric sites in the country. Local belief holds that if you are troubled by enemies or under the influence of negative energies, performing special rituals here can alleviate all your troubles.
With the arrival of Chaitra Navratri, the temple sees a massive influx of devotees, as special processions are held throughout the month, particularly on every Tuesday. The goddess is adorned with new garments, and offerings of khichdi are made. Additionally, many devotees come during these nine days to perform the mundan ceremony for their children.
The Tara-Tarini Temple is not just a symbol of Hindu faith; it is also revered by followers of Buddhism, who consider Goddess Tara as their deity and contributed to the temple’s construction. This is why she is also known as Buddhist Tara.
Architecturally, the temple features a vibrant main entrance adorned with lively carvings in the traditional ‘rekha’ style. Intricate panels decorate the temple, and within the sanctum, two stone idols are worshipped as Tara and Tarini. The goddess’s idol is always adorned with jewelry and is elaborately decorated each day.
