The Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, has encouraged people to adopt pranayama practices. They emphasize that regular pranayama helps in controlling breath and establishing balance in life. The ministry has provided detailed information about the four main types of pranayama.
According to the Patanjali Yoga Sutras, pranayama is categorized into four primary types, based on the rhythm and flow of breath. Practicing these techniques promotes physical health, calms the mind, and enhances concentration.
The AYUSH Ministry advises that these four types of pranayama should be learned gradually, using the correct methods and under the guidance of a yoga expert. Even a daily practice of 10-15 minutes can be highly beneficial. Pranayama not only improves physical health but also alleviates issues like anxiety, stress, and insomnia.
1. Rechak (External Breath): This is the first type of pranayama, focusing on exhaling. The practice emphasizes completely emptying the lungs. Rechak helps eliminate toxins from the body, cleanses the lungs, and reduces stress.
2. Purak (Internal Breath): The second type involves inhaling deeply and steadily. This practice increases oxygen intake, energizes the body, and enhances mental focus.
3. Kumbhak (Retention): The third and very important type involves holding the breath. It is divided into two parts: Antah Kumbhak (holding breath in) and Bahya Kumbhak (holding breath out). Kumbhak practice accumulates prana in the body, calms the mind, and deepens meditation. It should be practiced slowly and under expert supervision initially.
4. Chaturth (Fourth Type): This advanced type transcends both external and internal breaths. In this state, the breath naturally ceases, leading to a higher state of pranayama. Achieving this type requires extensive practice, allowing complete control over breath and providing profound spiritual experiences.
