The term ‘Shashank’ translates to ‘rabbit’ in Sanskrit, while ‘asana’ means ‘posture.’ Just as a rabbit curls up to protect itself from danger, practicing Shashankasana regularly allows the practitioner to experience comfort and tranquility.
The Ministry of AYUSH recommends incorporating this pose into your daily routine. Shashankasana is an effective yoga posture that alleviates stress, anxiety, and anger, promoting mental peace. It also improves flexibility in the lower back, enhances spinal health, and supports the digestive system, making it beneficial for both children and adults.
Performing Shashankasana is quite simple. Begin by sitting in Vajrasana on a yoga mat (knees bent and spine straight). Inhale deeply, raise your arms overhead, and slowly lower your body. Rest your forehead and palms on the ground. Stay in this position comfortably for 10 to 15 minutes before returning to a normal posture.
However, it is advisable to avoid this asana if you have severe back pain, high blood pressure, hernia, or injuries to the neck or knees.
