
New Delhi, March 31: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced a significant change in toll payment regulations. Starting April 1, cash payments at toll plazas will no longer be accepted. Highway users will be required to make payments exclusively through digital methods.
This new policy will be implemented across all toll plazas in the country. According to NHAI, travelers will only be able to pay via digital platforms such as FASTag and UPI at toll booths.
The primary aim of this initiative is to enhance efficiency and transparency in toll collection on national highways and expressways. Officials believe that a fully digital system will facilitate quicker passage for vehicles at toll plazas, reducing long queues and saving travel time.
By eliminating cash lanes, authorities expect smoother traffic flow, particularly during peak hours. The faster processing at toll booths is also anticipated to decrease fuel consumption and vehicle emissions, contributing to a cleaner environment.
However, this transition may cause inconvenience for some travelers, especially those unprepared for digital payments. Vehicles without a valid FASTag or sufficient balance may face fines or be stopped at toll plazas.
In such cases, travelers will have the option to scan QR codes available at toll booths to make instant payments via UPI. Yet, officials have cautioned that network issues could occasionally disrupt these transactions, leading to delays.
To avoid complications, travelers are advised to ensure their FASTag is activated, properly linked to their bank account, and has sufficient balance before starting their journey. It is also recommended to keep an active UPI app on their smartphones as a backup.
This change marks a significant step towards enhancing India’s digital infrastructure, making highway travel faster, smoother, and more efficient.
