Rajgir, March 31: President Droupadi Murmu visited Bihar on a one-day trip, where she attended the second convocation ceremony of Nalanda University as the chief guest. In her address, she described the event as a reaffirmation of a timeless civilizational commitment, emphasizing that knowledge is endless, dialogue will persist, and education will continue to serve humanity.
She congratulated the graduating students and praised the inclusion of over 30 countries in this batch, showcasing the university’s robust international character. President Murmu expressed her delight at Nalanda University attracting international students, calling it a positive sign of its resurgence as a prestigious center of knowledge and education.
She expressed confidence that Nalanda University will emerge as a leading educational institution in Asia and globally, distinguished not only for its academic excellence but also for its values. “I am pleased to see the university continuously advancing through interdisciplinary learning, international collaboration, and engagement with local communities,” she stated.
Appreciating the university’s community engagement initiatives, the President highlighted the importance of remaining connected to the local environment. She noted that the progress of the university should benefit the local society where it is established. Bihar’s Governor, Syed Ata Hasnain (Retd.), described Nalanda University as a symbol of continuity and renewal, linking ancient knowledge with contemporary aspirations. He stated that the university embodies enduring values that can guide humanity’s future.
India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar emphasized the university’s unique international character in his address. He noted that its significance has grown in this era of globalization. As India moves towards becoming a ‘developed nation,’ it is essential for the country to be prepared for the world and vice versa. Future generations must be more sensitive and connected to global events, and this graduating class will bring about that change. International students, in particular, will return to their countries as ambassadors of India.
Bihar’s Rural Development and Transport Minister, Shravan Kumar, highlighted the historical significance of Nalanda, stating that the university is not merely an institution for awarding degrees but a symbol of character and intellectual development.
Vice-Chancellor Sachin Chaturvedi welcomed the guests and presented the university’s progress report. He shared insights about key academic and institutional initiatives, including the university’s engagement with local and international communities. During the event, the President inaugurated the newly constructed 2000-seat state-of-the-art auditorium, Vishwamitra Hall. She also observed the engagement exhibition and interacted with local community members, while awarding gold medals to outstanding students.
