Ujjain witnessed a massive influx of devotees at the Baba Mahakal temple on the first Sunday of the new year. Pilgrims from distant places arrived to seek blessings and witness the special rituals held on this significant day.
Despite the cold weather, the enthusiasm of the devotees remained high as they patiently waited in long queues to participate in the late-night Bhasma Aarti. The divine sight of Baba Mahakal filled the hearts of the faithful with devotion, and the temple premises resonated with the chants of “Har Har Mahadev.”
On this Sunday, coinciding with Magh month Krishna Paksha Pratipada, the temple priests performed an extraordinary decoration of Baba Mahakal. After seeking permission from Baba Veerbhadra, the temple doors were opened and other deities in the sanctum were worshipped. The idol of Baba Mahakal was then bathed with ghee, water, milk, curd, and juice, followed by adornment using bhang.
The forehead of Baba Mahakal was decorated with belpatra (bilva leaves) and a silver crescent moon, enhancing the divine aura of the deity. After completing the decoration, the Bhasma Aarti was conducted, during which Baba is believed to appear in a formless aspect to devotees, but with full adornment, he manifests in a tangible form to alleviate their sufferings.
Today, Baba Mahakal was also adorned with a lotus and a garland made of makhana (fox nuts), adding to the spiritual splendour. The temple echoed with chants of “Jai Shri Mahakal” as the unique and mystical decoration drew the attention of all present. It is notable that Baba Mahakal is decorated differently every day, with each auspicious date bringing a new form for devotees to behold, which explains the large crowds attending the Bhasma Aarti.
The daily worship at the temple includes six aartis, each distinct in its own way, from morning till evening. Recently, Baba Mahakal was beautifully adorned in forms symbolising the moon, the sun, and the king, leaving devotees mesmerised by the divine spectacle.
